It isn’t easy to be a dancer, but for those who love the art of dancing, it’s a rewarding and wonderful past-time. Likewise, it isn’t easy for a dedicated young dancer to spend time practicing while learning at school, but distance learning might be a perfect solution.

Laurel Springs, an independent study school located in Ojai, California, is a prime example. It boasts students from across the United States and around the globe. Students are able to get in contact with teachers through the internet and over the phone. This independent study form of education, sometimes referred to as homeschooling, and sometimes involving parents and tutors, allows students to do their schoolwork at their own time and speed. All this makes it ideal for many young athletes and professionals, including dancers.

In fact, this can be a dream come true for those who want to practice dancing every single day. They don’t have to cut back on their dreams in order to get a high school diploma Students doing independent study are able to shape their own schedules and decide on their own subjects, and can even creatively meld their dancing work into other lesson subjects. After all, isn’t there quite a bit of math and science involved in dancing?

Instead of trying to push away their dancing and concentrating solely on academics, students can make time for all we need to get done. After a full day of dance practice, students can sit down with their lessons online or with their books, knowing they’re accomplishing what they need to in order to pursue dance professionally and get an education. And that’s only one quick example of how they could schedule things.

Lately there has even been attention given to three specific Laurel Springs ballet dancers in Georgia who made a video about their days and posted it online. The girls talk about how they’re able to both dance and learn, showing the set-up of their study spaces and what work they do in the studio. More than once the girls express how well this is all coming together for them. At youtube alone this video has been viewed about 60,000 times, and that’s not the only website that’s showing it. These girls, along with many other young dancers, find that by homeschooling they can get the best of both worlds.
